I get really frustrated when travelling overseas that you constantly have your water bottle taken off you and then have to buy another one.

Plastic pollution anyone?

So on a recent student field trip to Indonesia I set out to see if you can get through all the security checks etc with just one bottle…

You can’t take fluids of more than 100ml in your carry-on baggage on international flights. So the way to get around this with a water bottle is to drink or empty the contents before going through security. An empty bottle is allowed.

Once through security you can refill your bottle, providing you can find a water fountain of course and that’s not always easy…

And Voila! I successfully took my water bottle on to the flight out of Brisbane…

I then happily worked my way around Jakarta…

I did exactly the same for the flight to Bali and again, no issues…

I then worked my way around Bali, with my trusty water bottle by my side…

The biggest trick is actually getting the bottle back into Australia. You can use the same tactics to get through security, but on every international flight back into Australia (without fail) if you have refilled it – or even if you bought a fresh bottle of water after all the security checks – they will take it off you at the gate. Unless you empty it again…

Note the box of water bottles under the table as people are caught out at the gate…

Once the drink service started on the flight I just asked to have my water bottle filled, no dramas at all.

And that’s how you make it through your trip with your one plastic water bottle!

Just saying…
